The Challenge

Pearl entered training as a playful rescue puppy with several behaviours that made everyday handling more difficult. Her owners are highly active and wanted to be able to take Pearl along on their adventures, including 4×4 trips, off-roading, and hiking. For those activities, developing stronger on-leash obedience and responsiveness was an important part of her training.

During her initial evaluation, Pearl demonstrated that she could perform some basic behaviours, including down. However, she needed additional work with place, recall, heel, leash manners, and following her handler’s direction. Pearl could return when called, but her trainer noted that returning was only part of the desired response. She also needed to come back and sit.

Her leash behaviour was another major concern. Pearl pulled hard during walks and tended to move wherever she wanted rather than following her handler’s lead. She also became highly excited when she saw another dog. Her trainer described this behaviour as very playful rather than aggressive.

Before training, Pearl needed work on:

  • Leash manners
  • Heel
  • Recall
  • Returning and sitting after recall
  • Place command
  • Stability
  • Following her handler’s lead
  • Managing excitement around other dogs
  • Door manners
  • On-leash obedience

The Training Approach

Pearl’s 2-Week On Leash Board and Train Program focused on developing stronger obedience while addressing the leash and behavioural challenges identified during her initial evaluation. Her training worked on teaching Pearl to follow her handler’s direction rather than deciding where to go and how to move during walks.

Training focused on:

  • Strengthening on-leash obedience
  • Developing the heel command
  • Improving leash manners
  • Teaching Pearl to stay beside her handler
  • Improving recall
  • Reinforcing the return-and-sit response
  • Developing the place command
  • Building stability
  • Improving responsiveness to her handler
  • Working on door manners
  • Addressing excitement around other dogs

Place was also an important part of the training because it was used to develop greater stability and teach Pearl to remain in a designated position.

The Results

After two weeks of training, Pearl’s owners reported a noticeable difference in her behaviour and obedience. Her owners explained that before training, Pearl was a puppy who pulled heavily on the leash and had limited manners. Following the program, they specifically highlighted her progress with the heel command, sit, and stay.

According to her owners, Pearl showed improvement in:

  • Heel
  • Sit
  • Stay
  • On-leash behaviour
  • Overall obedience
  • Everyday manners

Pearl’s owners expressed excitement about continuing to build on her progress as they take her along on their active lifestyle and outdoor adventures.

Trainer Insight

Pearl’s starting point shows how a playful puppy can have basic obedience skills while still needing additional structure for everyday handling. Her training focused on developing reliable leash behaviour and teaching her to follow her handler’s direction. Recall, heel, place, and door manners were all addressed as part of building a stronger obedience foundation. For Pearl, the goal was not simply to teach individual commands, but to help her become more responsive and manageable during the types of outdoor activities her owners enjoy.
