The Challenge
When Koa arrived for training, his trainer identified several areas that needed attention. Koa struggled around unfamiliar people and did not get along with many dogs. His trainer noted that he needed behaviour modification as well as general obedience training. During the initial evaluation, Koa demonstrated some ability with the shake command but did not know the down command. He also showed jumping behaviour around people.
His recall needed improvement. Koa would return to his handler when called, but he did not consistently complete the command by sitting afterward. Koa also struggled with heel. While walking, he would swing from side to side instead of staying at his handler’s left hip. When frustrated during the exercise, he immediately jumped on his trainer and began fighting the leash. Door manners were another significant challenge. As soon as the door opened, Koa took off rather than waiting for permission.
Before training, Koa needed work on:
- Obedience
- Down command
- Recall completion
- Place command
- Heel positioning
- Leash manners
- Jumping on people
- Behaviour around unfamiliar people
- Interactions with other dogs
- Door manners
- Impulse control
The Training Approach
Koa’s 2-Week Board & Train Program focused on combining general obedience with behaviour modification. The goal was to establish clearer expectations and improve Koa’s ability to respond to commands while addressing the behaviours observed during his initial evaluation.
Training focused on:
- Building obedience
- Teaching basic commands
- Developing recall
- Reinforcing the sit response after recall
- Working on place
- Developing the heel command
- Improving leash behaviour
- Addressing jumping
- Improving door manners
- Working on behaviour around people and dogs
- Building better responsiveness
The training also included repeated work on heel and leash skills, with an emphasis on helping Koa remain positioned at his handler’s left side rather than moving from side to side.
The Results
Koa’s owner reported substantial progress following the training. At the beginning of the program, the owner described Koa as one of the most stubborn dogs they had encountered. After training, the owner described him as a “perfect listener” and reported that Koa could sit, lie down, and come when called. The owner also expressed being pleasantly surprised and amazed by the progress made during the program.
According to the owner, Koa showed improvement in:
- Listening and responsiveness
- Sit
- Down
- Recall
- Overall obedience
The owner’s testimonial provides direct feedback on Koa’s progress following the training program.
