The Challenge

Aries was described as a great dog, but his background as a rescue contributed to him being timid when out in public. One of the primary goals of his training was to help build his confidence and create greater stability. When Aries arrived, he knew some basic commands, including sit. However, his trainer identified several areas where he needed additional structure and consistency.

Aries did not yet understand the place command, which his trainer identified as an important tool for teaching stability. His recall also needed improvement, particularly because he became easily distracted when out in public. The down command presented another challenge because Aries was not yet comfortable enough to consistently perform the behaviour.

His leash skills required significant work as well. Aries knew nothing about the heel command and would go wherever he wanted at whatever speed he wanted. Door manners were another area that needed attention, as Aries did not yet understand that he should wait for permission before entering or exiting through a doorway.

Before training, Aries needed work on:

  • Building confidence in public
  • Stability
  • Place command
  • Recall
  • Down command
  • Heel
  • Leash manners
  • Staying focused around distractions
  • Door manners
  • Following handler direction

The Training Approach

Aries’ On Leash Board & Train Program focused on building his confidence while developing a stronger obedience foundation. Lauren worked on teaching Aries clearer expectations around basic commands, stability, walking, recall, and door manners.

Training focused on:

  • Building confidence
  • Developing stability
  • Teaching the place command
  • Improving recall
  • Increasing comfort with the down command
  • Introducing the heel command
  • Improving leash manners
  • Reducing pulling and zigzagging during walks
  • Improving responsiveness to his handler
  • Developing better door manners

The training addressed both Aries’ obedience skills and his confidence in situations where he had previously been timid or distracted.

The Results

Aries’ owner reported a significant difference following his training. Before training, the owner said Aries would pull and bark and did not reliably listen when called during activities such as hikes. After training, the owner reported that Aries would come running over immediately when called. The owner also noted that Aries was no longer pulling or zigzagging in front of them while walking on the beach.

According to his owner, Aries showed improvement in:

  • Recall
  • Responsiveness to his handler
  • Leash manners
  • Walking without pulling
  • Walking without zigzagging in front of his handler
  • Overall behaviour during outdoor activities

The owner described the difference as an “incredible” improvement and expressed pride in Aries and appreciation for his trainer.

Trainer Insight

Aries’ training demonstrates how obedience and confidence can be developed together. At the beginning of training, Aries knew some basic commands but struggled with stability, distractions, leash control, and confidence in public.

His program focused on building upon what he already knew while introducing clearer expectations for place, recall, down, heel, and door manners. The owner’s post-training feedback highlights improvements in recall and leash behaviour, particularly during outdoor activities such as hikes and walks on the beach.
