How Nakoa, a Yellow Lab, Strengthened His Obedience Around Distractions in Honolulu, HI

At A Glance

Nakoa is a Yellow Lab who returned to Off Leash K9 Training Hawaii for an On Leash Board & Train Program focused on taking the foundation he already had and expanding it into more challenging, high-distraction environments. Nakoa had previously trained with Lauren and already knew several basic commands. However, his follow-through and focus needed additional work, particularly when competing with distractions such as a ball. His heel also needed refinement so he could remain directly at his handler’s left side.

Program: On Leash Board & Train Program

The Challenge

Nakoa had already completed training with Lauren in the past, so he came into the program with an existing obedience foundation. When Lauren evaluated him at the beginning of the program, Nakoa demonstrated that he remembered several commands. He could sit and down, and his responses could be quick. However, knowing a command and consistently following through were two different things.

His recall was one example. Nakoa would return when called, but he did not consistently come all the way to Lauren’s feet and sit. During the evaluation, his attention was also strongly influenced by a ball, creating a distraction that competed with his handler for his focus. His heel command was still familiar to him, but his positioning needed refinement. Rather than staying directly to Lauren’s left side, Nakoa would sometimes cut in front of her.

At the beginning of training, Nakoa needed work on:

  • Command follow-through
  • Handler focus
  • Recall completion
  • Sitting at his handler’s feet after recall
  • Heel positioning
  • Remaining on his handler’s left side
  • Settling down during training
  • Responding around distractions
  • Expanding his existing obedience into busy environments

The Training Approach

Nakoa’s training focused on building upon the obedience foundation he already had rather than starting from the beginning. Lauren’s goal was to take the commands Nakoa already understood and develop stronger follow-through while exposing him to increasingly busy environments.

Training focused on:

  • Reinforcing known commands
  • Improving command follow-through
  • Strengthening focus on the handler
  • Refining recall
  • Teaching Nakoa to return and sit at his handler’s feet
  • Improving heel positioning
  • Keeping Nakoa directly to his handler’s left side
  • Increasing reliability around distractions
  • Working in busy environments
  • Expanding his existing obedience foundation

The program placed particular emphasis on exposure. Lauren explained that the goal was to get Nakoa into “crazy busy environments” and have him continue working in those settings.

The Results

After two weeks, Lauren reported that Nakoa had done well with the training and described the program as focused on exposure and working in busy environments.

The training video shows Nakoa progressing from his initial evaluation into work designed to strengthen his obedience in more distracting settings.

The program focused on improving:

  • Obedience follow-through
  • Handler focus
  • Recall reliability
  • Heel positioning
  • Command consistency
  • Ability to work around distractions
  • Performance in busy environments

Lauren highlighted Nakoa’s progress after the two-week session and expressed that she had a great experience working with him again.

Trainer Insight

Nakoa’s training demonstrates that dogs can have an established obedience foundation while still needing additional work with follow-through and focus.

Because Nakoa already knew several commands, the goal was to expand upon that foundation rather than simply reteach the basics. This included refining his heel position, improving his recall response, and helping him maintain focus when distractions were present.

Working in busy environments gave Nakoa opportunities to practise the commands he already knew in more challenging settings.
